Heroes Season 4: Redemption or Revenge?

First look at the upcoming season of Heroes!

Vol 5: Redemption

I realize I may be in the minority here but I simply didn’t hate the last couple seasons of Heroes like so many of my very vocal nerdy contemporaries. Sure, I have a few criticisms here and there (ok, so I did kinda want to hit Claire’s season 2 boyfriend in the face with a hammer) but overall I still think it’s an incredibly fun show with endless potential.

That being said, like everyone else, I too hope this season is able to reclaim the spark of the first and college lesbian experimentation and super-powered circus freaks are as good a place to start as any!

Heroes season 4 will commence with a 2 hour premiere Monday, September 21!

Secret Societies: The DHARMA Initiative Exposed!

Like a little truth sprinkled in with your fiction?

Part 1 of 5 of a 1980’s exposé of the of the clandestine group The DHARMA Initative.

Having read my fair share of conspiracy research you can imagine my eyes opened wide upon viewing this latest viral clip from the producers of Lost. It’s not a sign of paranoia when you think the TV is giving you secret messages is it?

Mixed Reactions to Marvel Anime

We got our first glimpses of 2 of the 4 planned Warren Ellis scripted Marvel Anime series this weekend, Iron Man and Wolverine! While I am stoked as hell for anything that mad bastard Ellis does, I’ve got mixed feelings about what I’ve seen here and judging by general buzz of my geeky brethren around the internet I am far from alone.

First off, I thought Iron Man looked incredible and seemed especially well suited (no pun intended) for the anime treatment. The detail of the armor is fantastic and the action looks powerfully kinetic!

Wolverine however leaves me feeling a bit wary. They went for a very uncharacteristic thin and lanky look, very gaunt face with a ridiculous anime mullet. In fact, aside from the claws there is absolutely nothing in his design that indicates that this is Wolverine. Now it is important to keep in mind that these are meant to be Japanese re-imaginings of the characters so they do have a bit more creative leeway. Hopefully Mr. Ellis will deliver a story bad ass enough (which he says will be loosely based on Claremont/Miller miniseries) to make us forget how friggin’ weird he looks.

Both series are expected to debut Spring 2010.

Metropolis: Smallville the Movie??

Caught an enticing rumor for Smallville fans on the Ain’t it Cool webpage today. Take it with a grain of salt as it comes from an unconfirmed source but reportedly they spotted a sign being prepped for next month’s San Diego Comic-Con presentation that reads:

On black, with crimson/red text in the same font lettering that Smallville uses, and a transparent grey Superman "S" watermark behind the text:

Then at the bottom is a banner advertising the Smallville presentation, with the time/place (can’t remember)

AIC reports that they are withholding for the moment further details that seem to lend this story some credence, also suggesting that this is a movie length project and not a spin-off series. Christmas 2010 makes sense for a TV movie finale, as the series is expected to conclude it’s 9th and presumably final season in May of that year. While the site poses the question whether or not this may be a big screen feature, that seems doubtful as it would most likely confuse general audiences not familiar with the show, especially with Warner’s unsure stance on the film franchise since the lukewarm reception of Superman Returns.

Despite that within the last couple seasons the show has become more of a guilty pleasure,  I would be very fired up to see this! I have a real soft spot for Smallville and it deserves one hell of a blow out send off. I’m sure fans would love Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor and see years of tension, teasing and build up finally pay off in an epic showdown with the Man of Steel, tights and flights and all!

Feast Your Eyes Upon The Maxx!!!

Long before doggedly faithful page to screen comic adaptations like Sin City and Watchmen, there was one little show on MTV that set the bar. Way back in 1995, The Maxx debuted as part of the short lived MTV’s Oddities series. Based on the comic written and illustrated by the brilliant Sam Kieth, it was nearly an exact panel for panel, word for word translation, complete with Kieth’s incredibly distinctive drawing style. Not to mention the voiceover work, which was so spot on perfect I have not been able to read the comic without hearing them in my head since.

The Maxx has always held a special place in my heart which only deepens with each revisit. It is a story so mind-bending and surreal yet simultaneously very grounded and touching. Until now it was only able to be seen in the badly edited for time VHS released in ‘96 or grainy home recorded bootlegs floating around online, so I am thrilled to see that MTV is now streaming the entire series right here for free! It’s fantastic to see it again in such crisp and clear quality and I can only hope this will lead to an eventual full DVD/Bluray release!

12 Minutes of Ronald D. Moore’s Virtuality!

Ron Moore

Sci-Fi Mastermind Ronald D. Moore

Ronald D. Moore, the man who gave us arguably the greatest sci-fi series ever when he reinvented Battlestar Galactica is bringing a new deep space saga to the small screen with Virtuality. The 2 hour backdoor pilot is set to air this Friday, June 26th on Fox. Yes, the network that canned beloved geek TV like Firefly and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is going to torture us again by getting us hooked on a show almost certain to never be resolved. But damnit, optimist that I am, I am still going to get excited!

The potential series follows the 12 men and women aboard the Phaeton, an interstellar space-craft set on a 10 year expedition to a distant star system. To maintain sanity under such confined conditions each member is granted their own hi-tech virtual reality headset so they can escape to any environment of their choosing. However, mysterious glitches in the system begin to arouse suspicion. Particularly with the involvement of a reality TV show that is broadcasting their journey back on Earth.

Check out this new 12 minute preview!

Ron Moore has certainly earned my utter blind faith so I jumpin’ right on board! I am really interested to see how this concept develops. I dig the juxtaposition of a tense claustrophobic space mission with the endless expanse of virtual reality. Talk about havin’ your nerd cake and eatin’ it too.

It’s going to be up to us whether this becomes a series or not so be sure to tune in this Friday the 26th and make sure Fox knows if you want more Moore!

The Pros and Cons of Cylons

Science fiction and reality collide Friday, June 12th, at the World Science Festival in New York when Michael Hogan (Colonel Saul Tigh) and Mary McDonnell (President Laura Roslyn) of Battlestar Galactica take the stage alongside a few of the leading minds in robotics to discuss some of the scientific, philosophical, and ethical implications of a coming age where super intelligent computers and cybernetic human enhancements may become standards of living.

From discussing human rights with the United Nations to now the future of robotics at the World Science Festival, it is absolutely thrilling and inspiring to see that Battlestar Galactica has been so embraced by the world at large as perhaps the epitome of what science fiction could and should be. Not just providing some exciting escapist fantasy but truly holding up a mirror to society and providing a cautionary tale that we can learn and grow from.

For anyone wishing to attend, it is being held at the 92st Y in Manhattan and you can obtain tickets by clicking here

Oh yea, just in case you nerds need any further reasons to go, there will also be sneak previews for the awaited TV movie prequel to the series, Battlestar Galactica: The Plan!
